Employment is widely recognised as the single most effective factor in reducing reoffending. Yet too many prison leavers remain jobless, leading to high reoffending rates and huge costs to society.
Scale of Need
Each year around 70,000 men and women leave prison in England and Wales, yet fewer than 1 in 5 are working immediately after release and 7 in 10 remain unemployed six months later. This gap represents thousands of people struggling to reintegrate.
Economic Cost
Re-offending costs the country an estimated £18 billion annually. Stable employment can reduce that risk by up to a third, but only a small minority of employers have actually hired individuals with convictions. However, employers who do hire people with convictions report very positive outcomes.
Public Support
